Born in a family of 11 children, Gibson was the second male child. When he was 12 years old, his father Hutton Gibson relocated to Australia which was his mother's native land. Another reason for the relocation was to avoid getting his eldest son recruited into the Vietnam War draft.
Gibson got his high school education at New South Wales in St Leo's Catholic College. He was attracted to drama and took up acting seriously by enrolling into the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.

Robyn Denise Moore remained to be Mel's wife till 2004. They got married in 1980 in the old fashioned catholic way. He had a huge family consisting of 6 sons and a daughter. His daughter Hannah got married to the Kenny Wayne, the blues musician in 2006 refuting controversies of her becoming a nun.
